Empowering Farmers and Strengthening the Local Economy Through the Turmeric Cultivation Project

Kuruwita Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society, in collaboration with the Small-scale Agribusiness Participation Programme (SAPP), implemented a turmeric cultivation project with the participation of cooperative members within the society’s area of operation, with the aim of strengthening the economic well-being of local farmers.

Under this project, financial assistance and machinery and equipment were provided to farmers engaged in turmeric cultivation. As a further step towards supporting agricultural development and value addition, machinery and equipment worth approximately LKR 3 million (Rs. 3,000,000.00) were handed over to the parent cooperative society, Kuruwita Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society, on 30 September 2026.

With the support of this equipment, the society expects to purchase turmeric harvested by local farmers and facilitate the cleaning, mechanical drying, and grinding processes to produce high-quality turmeric products for the market. In addition, the machinery will enable the processing of other spices and grains cultivated in the area, creating opportunities to develop value-added products that meet market quality standards.

This initiative aims to improve market access for farmers, reduce post-harvest losses, enhance product quality, increase farmers’ income, and create new opportunities for local entrepreneurship. Through these efforts, the society seeks to strengthen the regional economy and empower farmers to become successful entrepreneurs.

Under the leadership of the Honourable Chairman and the Board of Directors, Kuruwita Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society remains committed to promoting sustainable economic development and improving the livelihoods of the farming community. All cooperative members and local farmers are warmly invited to actively participate in this initiative and contribute to its success.
